Our beginnings

The start of the new year begins exciting changes to our family.  Malcolm is now 3 years old and we are starting our adventures into homeschooling.  We are taking it slow, little formal work and lots of play.
Using what we found online from Confessions of a Homeschooler and 1+1+1=1  and what we find at our library we are going to go with a letter of the week format incorporating counting, shapes, and colors as we go.

I picked Galleons Lap as the name for our homeschool very carefully.  It's from the last chapter of Winnie the Pooh.  It is a magical place that Christopher Robin takes Winnie when he's saying goodbye.  "Sitting there they could see the whole world spread out until it reached the sky, and whatever there was all the world over was with them in Galleons Lap."  I want our homeschool to spread the world out in front of our children and give them access to all of it.  I want my children to pick what they find interesting and just enjoy it.  The number one thing I want my children to get out of homeschooling is a great, deep desire and love for learning.

With that in mind, we are starting our first week with the letter A.  Our theme, A is for Apple.  While I will introduce letter sounds, it won't be a major focus for us at this point.  Instead, I would love letter recognition.  Malcolm isn't ready to start writing yet either, so we'll be doing things to help with his fine motor skills and just work on his concentration and sitting still for a little bit at a time.  I'll post later this week about what we did each day, how it went, and what we would change or keep doing.  Wish us luck!
